TRAVEL-TRAILER RECORD · 2027

Basecamp Xe 20X

The Xe 20X is the heavier Basecamp by 250 lb, yet Airstream publishes the lower hitch weight of the two, 506 lb. It trades the stove for a portable induction cooktop on a fully inverted electric system.

3,750 lb on the scale, 506 lb at the hitch

The Xe shares its floor plan and its 20 ft 2 in length with the Basecamp 20X and outweighs it on both headline ratings. Its Unit Base Weight is 3,750 lb and its GVWR is 4,500 lb, 250 lb and 200 lb more than the 20X. Yet its published hitch weight is 506 lb, 29 lb less and 1 of 2 lightest: 13.5% of dry weight, against 15.3% for the 20X.

The drawings do not account for the gap: Airstream's two renders put the U-dinette, wet bath, galley, and rear benches in the same positions, so the lower figure does not come from a rearranged floor plan. It is Airstream's empty-trailer figure, and the Xe's strongest number.

Induction and an inverted system: what the Xe 20X changes in the galley

Airstream's feature list for the Xe keeps the rear convertible bed, the space-saving wet bath, and the convertible U-seated dinette with a large swivel table, and in place of the 20X's efficient mid-ship galley it names a fully inverted electric system. On the render, the galley counter holds a single induction cooktop where the 20X shows a two-burner stove. The spec page lists the cooktop as a 1500 W portable single burner induction unit. Airstream's description calls it a spacious kitchen, beside two living spaces that convert to sleeping areas.

The tradeoff is one burner and 50 lb of cargo capacity. The Xe's Net Carrying Capacity is 750 lb, the lower of the two, and it matches GVWR minus base weight exactly: 4,500 lb less 3,750 lb is 750 lb, arithmetic from Airstream's own figures. A cook who needs two pots going at once should compare the 20X; one who wants electric cooking has the reason to stay.

Only two Basecamps exist for 2027, so the other two comparisons come from lines with a plan built for a similar job. Differences use the published figures on each record.

Three checks that belong to the Xe 20X

  • Ask the dealer to show the inverter controls and which outlets and appliances run through the fully inverted electric system on this unit. It is the feature Airstream names for the Xe and not for the 20X.
  • Find where the portable induction cooktop stows for travel and where it plugs in at the galley counter. Induction heats only pans a magnet sticks to, so check the cookware you plan to bring.
  • Read the weight label on the exact unit and compare it with the published 3,750 lb base weight and 506 lb hitch weight. The Xe's lower hitch figure is Airstream's number for the build, and the label is what governs the trailer in front of you.

Xe or XE, and one shared floor-plan code

All figures come from Airstream's 2027 Basecamp Xe product page and full spec page, read on 2026-09-26. Airstream files this plan under the same floor-plan code as the Basecamp 20X, "20X", and names it Basecamp Xe 20X in full; Xe 20X keeps the two records apart here. Airstream spells the product Basecamp Xe on the page heading and floor-plan name and Basecamp XE in the spec page title.

Airstream's labels are Unit Base Weight for dry weight, Net Carrying Capacity (NCC) for cargo, and Waste Tank for the black tank; both heights are given with A/C. The headline rounds the length to 20 feet, and the spec table's 20 ft 2 in is used here. The spec page also gives a hitch ball height in inches, and lists part-bed widths of 41 and 43 inches beside a complete bed of 82 by 78 inches, without saying which sleeping area each fits. The render has no labels, so positions here come from its shapes and Airstream's feature names.
