Basecamp 20X

Of Airstream's two 2027 Basecamps, the 20X is the lighter build at 3,500 lb and the one with more cargo capacity, 800 lb. All four of its sleeping places start the day as seating.

Why the 20X is the lighter way into a Basecamp

Airstream builds one Basecamp floor plan for 2027 in two versions, and the 20X is the base of the pair. Its Unit Base Weight is 3,500 lb against 3,750 lb for the Xe 20X, and its GVWR is 4,300 lb against 4,500 lb. On both counts it ranks 1 of 2, which is the plain case for choosing it: the trailer itself weighs less before anything goes inside.

Its 800 lb Net Carrying Capacity is also the larger of the two, 50 lb more than the Xe. Airstream's figures agree with each other here: 4,300 lb of GVWR minus 3,500 lb of base weight is 800 lb, exactly the published capacity. That is arithmetic from two published figures, not a weighing.

Two lounges, four beds: the 20X's convertible tradeoff

Airstream describes the 20X as a kitchen, a bathroom, and a lounge area that turns into a bed, and lists its features as a rear convertible bed, a space-saving wet bath, a convertible U-seated dinette with a large swivel table, and an efficient mid-ship galley. On the render, the U-dinette wraps the rounded front wall, the wet bath and the galley face each other across the aisle in the middle, and two long benches line the rear walls. Airstream's specification lists a stainless steel LP gas stove with two burners and a hinged glass lid, and the render places it at the forward end of the galley counter with a round sink behind it.

The tradeoff follows from that arrangement. The 20X reaches its sleeping capacity of up to 4 only when both living areas are made up as beds, so with four aboard no seating is in use until morning. Airstream gives the complete rear bed as 82 by 78 inches. A couple who sleeps at the back keeps the front dinette as a table all day; a family of four makes and unmakes both ends.

Making up the 20X for the night, in order

  1. Start at the rear. Fold the two long benches into the rear convertible bed and see where the two small rounded table tops drawn in the aisle go once the bed is down. Measure the result against Airstream's 82 by 78 inch figure.
  2. With the rear bed made, check whether the framed hatch in the rear floor can still be opened. Airstream lists it as a rear floor storage compartment with a drain plug and prints a weight limit for it on the spec page; read that limit before packing it.
  3. Walk forward past the wet bath and galley to the U-dinette, lower the swivel table, and make up the front bed. Measure its width, because Airstream's two part-bed figures of 41 and 43 inches leave the answer to the unit.
  4. With both beds made, walk from each one to the wet bath, which the render places midship on the left. It is the one room every sleeper shares, and on this plan it sits between the two beds.

Three plans to hold against the 20X

The Basecamp line has only one other plan, so two of these reach into other lines on the site. Differences are computed from each record's published figures.

How the 20X figures were read

Every figure comes from Airstream's 2027 Basecamp product page and full spec page, read on 2026-09-26. Airstream's labels differ from this site's: dry weight is its Unit Base Weight, cargo carrying capacity its Net Carrying Capacity (NCC), and the black tank its Waste Tank. Both heights carry the qualifier "with A/C". The headline rounds the length to 20 feet; the spec table's 20 ft 2 in is used here. The spec page also gives a hitch ball height, in inches.

The part-bed widths of 41 and 43 inches both appear on the spec page with nothing tying either to the front or rear sleeping area. The render carries no labels, so room positions here come from its shapes and Airstream's named features.
