Reading the rear kitchen

Keystone's tagline is 'Luxury Rear Kitchen, L-Sofa with Recliners'. The named features are a rear kitchen with residential hardware, solid surface counters and a black stainless undermount sink, a bench seat ottoman with storage, an L-sofa with recliners, a 5,500 BTU fireplace, a 60 by 80 queen bed with a 70 by 80 king option and underbed storage, a full wardrobe with sliding mirror doors, a large shower with glass door and skylight, a vanity with drawers, a linen cabinet, a tall slide-out, dual heated holding tanks, a 60K tankless water heater, and a 50-amp inlet. Four slides.

A rear kitchen concentrates the kitchen's fixed weight, counters and sink included, behind the axles. On the 350LLK that lines up with the numbers: the published pin is 2,240 lb, 91 lb lighter than the 364BHL's even though the 350LLK is 371 lb heavier overall and 3 in longer. The tradeoff is that the room a couple spends the most time in sits at the far end of a 39 ft 3 in body, and it is the room that has to be walked with the slides closed at every stop; the chain below is built around that.

Sleeping capacity is where the 350LLK declares its purpose. Keystone lists 4, the lowest figure in the lineup, and the plan shares it with the 260MLE, the shortest plain-subline plan, which is 8 ft 4 in shorter and 2,366 lb lighter. Between those two the subline offers three rear-living plans and a rear den that all sleep 6, and the 350LLK spends its extra length on the kitchen and the sofa rather than on beds. The 2,240 lb pin ranks 15 of 16, second heaviest, yet as a share of dry weight, 18.6%, it sits mid-pack at 9 of 16; the plan's own 12,040 lb is what pushes the pin figure up, and that share is the ratio of two published figures, not a measurement.

Walk it from the hitch to the back wall

In order, because the rear kitchen is the last thing you reach and the first thing to test.

  1. Close all four slides at the dealer and walk the full length from the entry to the rear kitchen. On a rear-kitchen plan this aisle is the route to the refrigerator, the sink, and the counters at every stop, and every retracted slide is a wall in that aisle.
  2. Open the slides and sit in each recliner on the L-sofa with the fireplace on. It is the only sofa Keystone names, and the number of reclining seats is the living room's seating count.
  3. Stand at the bench seat ottoman and open its storage. It is the storage seat Keystone names, and where it sits relative to the counters decides whether it doubles as a place to eat.
  4. Ask which mattress is installed. Keystone offers the 60 by 80 queen as standard and a 70 by 80 king as an option, and the king is 10 inches wider beside the mirror-door wardrobe.

The other rear kitchen, on a Half-Ton body with bunksCougar Half-Ton 29MBD

Keystone's tagline for the 29MBD is rear kitchen, mid bunk, king master bed. It is 5 ft 4 in shorter, 2,715 lb lighter, and 605 lb lighter on the pin, with two slides instead of four and sleeping for 10 rather than 4. Carrying capacity is 785 lb lower at 2,175 lb, and the tanks total 144 gallons against 189. RVUSA lists its GVWR at 11,500 lb.

2 ft 5 in shorter, 757 lb lighter, 465 lb lighter on the pin, with three slides and sleeping for 6. Carrying capacity is 2,467 lb, 493 lb less than the 350LLK. The sofa goes to the back as the den, and the kitchen is Keystone's residential-style one with a bench seat and two chairs.

The other four-slide Cougar is the same 39 ft 3 in, 459 lb heavier, and carries 40 lb less on the pin, with sleeping for 10 from a bonus room and loft. Its carrying capacity is 2,501 lb, 459 lb below the 350LLK, and Keystone puts its kitchen on an island rather than at the rear.
