Lightest on the pin, lightest on cargo

Two figures define the 28RLI, and they pull in opposite directions.

Rear living, and the kitchen Keystone calls gourmet

The tagline is "Rear Living, King Bed, Gourmet Kitchen". Keystone's feature list names a main slide-out, a booth dinette, a king bed with underbed storage, a shower with skylight, a 21-inch range with glass cover, a 10.6 cubic foot refrigerator, a 60K tankless water heater, an 18K BTU air conditioner, a 30K BTU furnace, electric four-point leveling, axles with ABS, Goodyear 10-ply tires, dual-pane frameless windows, one electric awning, and slide toppers. It is a Cougar Half-Ton, and RVUSA counts two slides.

Rear living fixes one end of the plan. The walkthrough is for finding out what the two slides carry and how the kitchen sits between the living room and the bed, because the feature list names only the main slide-out. The tradeoff on this layout is not the pin, which is the family's lightest share; it is the cargo figure. At 1,821 lb it ranks 15 of 16, 239 lb under the 26RES and 589 lb under the 30REP, the two other rear-living Half-Tons, and 31 lb above the 316RLS, the rear-living Cougar that publishes the lowest figure in the lineup.

Put another way, the 28RLI asks the least of a hitch and gives the least room on the label to load behind it. Both statements come from the same two published numbers and RVUSA's GVWR, and a buyer choosing between it and the 26RES is choosing between a second slide with two more sleeping places and 239 lb of carrying capacity.

Start at the back wall

  1. Sit in the rear living room with both slides in, then out. The main slide-out is the one Keystone names; find out what the second slide carries and whether the living room depends on it.
  2. Open the glass cover on the 21-inch range, open the 10.6 cubic foot refrigerator, and count the drawers, then decide what the word gourmet refers to on the unit in front of you.
  3. Lift the king mattress for the underbed storage, the one interior storage volume named. With 1,821 lb of carrying capacity, the family's second-lowest, where things go matters as much as what goes.
  4. Measure the roof at the 18K BTU air conditioner. Keystone publishes 12 ft 8 in as one figure that includes the A/C rather than listing it separately, which is 10 in under a 13 ft 6 in clearance.
