Why the 32CHILL is on a different list from the other six
Every other Cardinal is at least 38 ft 3 in long. The 32CHILL stops at 35 ft 3 in, which leaves 4 ft 9 in of a 40-foot site unused; the other six all run past 40 feet except the 33CHEF, which clears it by 1 ft 9 in. It is also the lightest of the seven at 9,688 lb dry and carries the lowest published pin weight, 1,765 lb, so it asks the least of a truck's payload before anything is loaded.
Forest River's drawing puts the living room at the back: a sectional sofa in the rear slide, an entertainment center with a fireplace across the rear wall, a hi-top table with chairs, and a pantry beside a 16 cubic foot refrigerator in the opposite slide. The kitchen counter and bath sit mid-ship, and the king bed rides in the front slide with a dresser, wardrobe, and washer and dryer prep. Three slides in total.

Published specifications
The tradeoff is in the tanks, not the floor plan
A rear living room on a 35-foot trailer is not the compromise here. The 38-gallon gray tank is. With 60 gallons of fresh water on board and 38 gallons of gray capacity, the gray tank can fill before the fresh tank runs dry; that is arithmetic from the two published figures, not a measurement of how any particular unit drains. The 33CHEF, 35CRIB, 36FUN, and 37GALLEY all carry 76 gallons gray on the same 60-gallon fresh tank, so a buyer who dry-camps for more than a night or two has a real reason to look one plan up the lineup.
The rear-living arrangement does shape the towing picture in one way. The sectional slide, fireplace, and entertainment center all sit behind the axles, and the front slide holds the bed plus the washer and dryer prep. Appliances installed in that prep space add weight ahead of the axles, which raises pin weight above the 1,765 lb published for the empty trailer. On the lightest Cardinal that matters less than it would on the 35CRIB, but it is still weight the truck's payload has to absorb.
Cargo carrying capacity is published at 2,500 lb, fifth of seven in the family. Forest River labels both UVW and cargo capacity as estimated averages for a standard build, so the exact unit's label decides what the trailer can actually carry.
Four things to test on a 32CHILL walkthrough
These checks only make sense on this layout. A front-living or bunkhouse Cardinal would need a different list.
- Close the rear sectional slide and the opposite kitchen slide, then walk from the entry door to the bathroom and to the refrigerator. On a rear-living plan the two slides face each other across the aisle, and this is the path you will use at fuel stops with the slides in.
- Count the chairs at the hi-top table. It is the only table on the plan, there is no booth dinette, and the number of seats and where the chairs stow for travel decide whether four people can eat inside.
- Open the washer and dryer prep space in the bedroom and decide now whether appliances are going in. If they are, ask the dealer for the unit's certification label before you shop for a truck, because that weight lands ahead of the axles and shows up as pin weight.
- Measure the roof-mounted air conditioner on the actual unit. The published 13 ft 3 in exterior height leaves 3 in under a 13 ft 6 in clearance, and an added second unit or a taller shroud uses that margin.
The Cardinals worth holding it against
Chosen by what each plan does differently, not by nearest length. Differences are computed from the published figures on the records.
3 ft longer and 870 lb heavier, but the gray tank doubles from 38 to 76 gallons and cargo capacity rises by 827 lb to 3,327 lb, the highest in the family. The kitchen moves to the rear and the living room to the middle.
Open record →The other end-of-trailer living roomCardinal 36FLPuts the living room in the front cap instead of the rear, with the bedroom at the back. It costs 9 ft 2 in of length, 1,595 lb of dry weight, and 470 lb of pin weight, and adds a fourth slide and two sleeping places.
Open record →Same tanks, more bedsCardinal 38DENThe only other Cardinal with the 38-gallon gray and black tanks. In exchange for 9 ft 2 in more length and 1,950 lb more dry weight it sleeps up to 9 instead of 4, with a loft den at the rear.
Open record →Where each figure on this page comes from
Length, weights, GVWR, cargo capacity, tank sizes, slide count, and the room layout come from Forest River's 2027 Cardinal 32CHILL page and drawing, read on 2026-08-15 and again on 2026-09-12. Sleeping capacity comes from RVUSA's 2027 spec guide, which lists four; RVUSA's guide for the same plan under the Wildcat badge lists three, and Forest River publishes no figure for either. The Wildcat 32CHILL is published with identical weights and dimensions, and its former record on this site now points here.
