Start with the pin, because the layout explains it
The 36FL publishes 2,235 lb of hitch weight on 11,283 lb of dry weight. That is 19.8% of dry weight, the highest share of the seven Cardinals, even though four other plans weigh more. The reason is on the drawing: the entire living room rides in the raised front cap, over the pin. An entertainment center and fireplace fill the front wall, theater seating faces them, and a tri-fold sofa sits in each of the two front slides. Below the steps the kitchen runs along one wall with the refrigerator in a third slide beside a pair of hi-top chairs, the bath sits behind that with a shower, linen closet, and toilet, and the rear of the trailer is the bedroom: a 66 by 80 inch king in the fourth slide, a dresser, and a wardrobe. One 15 ft 3 in awning.
That is the opposite arrangement from the 32CHILL, 33CHEF, and 38DEN, where the king bed is what rides over the hitch. Put the heavier furniture at the front and the pin carries more of it. The 36FL's 2,235 lb is 470 lb more pin than the 32CHILL and 350 lb more than the 33CHEF, and it is tied with the 38DEN for the second-heaviest in the family.

Living up front is a travel-day question as much as a campsite one
With the slides out, the front cap is a room: two sofas, theater seats, a fireplace, and the television wall. With the slides in, both sofas retract into the cap, and the living room is the part of the trailer that closes up for the road. The kitchen and bath stay on the main level, and the bedroom is at the far end past the bath. That ordering matters at a fuel stop: the refrigerator is in a slide, the bed is the last room from the door, and the living room is up a set of steps.
The tank package is the 174-gallon one: 60 fresh, 76 gray, 38 black. The gray tank is the larger size the 33CHEF also carries, and the 38-gallon black tank is the smaller of the two Forest River uses in this family. On a plan with one bath and up to six sleepers that is the capacity figure to weigh against how long a stay runs between dump stations.
What to test in the front cap and at the back
- Close both front slides and step up into the cap. This is the travel configuration, and the two tri-fold sofas and theater seating are what fold into that space.
- Sit in the theater seating with the slides out and look at the fireplace wall. The entertainment center is on the front wall of the cap, so the viewing distance is fixed by the cap depth rather than by a slide.
- Walk from the entry to the king bed. The bedroom is at the rear, behind the bath, and the 66 by 80 inch bed is in the rear slide; check the walk-around room with that slide in as well as out.
- Open the refrigerator with the kitchen slide retracted. The fridge shares the mid slide with the hi-top chairs, which is the one slide on the main level.
Where the 36FL sits next to its closest relatives
Chosen because each one answers a question the 36FL raises: what if the bed stays at the front, what if the sleeping count matters more, what if the kitchen should be up front instead.
The 38DEN is also 44 ft 5 in, also four slides, and publishes the same 2,235 lb hitch and 14,235 lb GVWR. It weighs 355 lb more, sleeps up to 9 instead of 6, puts the king over the hitch and a loft den at the rear, and has 355 lb less cargo capacity and the 38-gallon gray tank.
Open record →Kitchen in the cap instead of the sofasCardinal 37GALLEYKeeps the bedroom at the rear but puts the kitchen in the front cap. It is 1 ft 8 in shorter, 160 lb lighter, sleeps the same six, has three slides rather than four, 155 lb less pin weight, and 5 lb more cargo capacity. Two hide-a-beds and theater seating fill the middle.
Open record →The conventional layout, six feet shorterCardinal 33CHEFBed at the front, kitchen at the rear, living room in the middle. It gives up 6 ft 2 in and one slide, weighs 725 lb less, carries 350 lb less pin, publishes 375 lb more cargo capacity, and sleeps the same six.

Forest River labels UVW and cargo capacity as estimated averages for a standard build. Sleeping capacity is from RVUSA's 2027 spec guide. Forest River lists the same plan with the same figures as the Wildcat 36FL.
